Ingredients 🛒
- 1-2 cups water – to cover the eggs
- 6 large eggs – peeled 🥚
- 2 tbsp black tea leaves – or 2 black tea bags 🍵
- 2 tbsp soy sauce – for seasoning
- 1 tbsp dark soy sauce – for color
- 1 tbsp Chinese five-spice powder – for a unique flavor blend
- 1 tsp sugar – balances the flavors 🍭
- 2-3 star anise – for a warm, aromatic spice 🌟
- 1 cinnamon stick – adds warmth
- 2-3 slices of ginger – for a fresh kick 🧄
Instructions 👩🍳
1 . Boil the Eggs:
- Place the eggs in a pot and cover with cold water.
- Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
- Remove the eggs and place them in a bowl of ice water to cool. Once cool, gently crack the shells with a spoon, being careful not to peel them.
2. Prepare the Tea Mixture:
- In a separate pot, bring 2 cups of water to a boil.
- Add the black tea leaves (or tea bags), soy sauce, dark soy sauce, Chinese five-spice powder, sugar, star anise, cinnamon stick, and ginger.
- Stir to combine and let the mixture simmer for 5 minutes to blend the flavors.
3. Simmer the Eggs:
- Add the cracked eggs to the tea mixture.
- Ensure the eggs are fully submerged. Add more water if needed.
- Simmer on low heat for at least 30 minutes. For deeper flavor, simmer for 1-2 hours, or leave the eggs in the mixture overnight in the refrigerator.
4. Cool and Serve:
- Remove the eggs from the pot and let them cool.
- Peel the eggs to reveal the marbled pattern and serve.
5. Enjoy:
- Tea Eggs make a great snack on their own or can be served with rice and vegetables.
